An Introduction to Pottery

Hand Building Workshop in Moffat - THIS WORKSHOP IS NOW FULL

Time: 10am to 1pm – One off 3 hour workshop
Cost: £65.00 per person

Have you always wanted to give pottery a go? Then this is the perfect one off workshop for you.

You don't need to commit to a lengthy course, just come along and have a fun learning a new skill in a relaxed and supportive environment – plus you'll have made your own piece of pottery for your home.


What you'll learn
In this workshop you'll be using the coil pot method to create your own unique pieces. Using this method you'll be able to make bowl/s, planter/s, cup/s, vase/s etc.
All these vessels will teach you the cornerstone techniques of coil handbuilding. You'll then decorate your piece/s using stamp imprinting, writing on pots, carving, applying other clay embelishments. The possibilities are endless. At the end of the workshop, you will have created your very own unique piece.

 

Who is the class for?
Beginner potters, or you may have done a few classes or just want to enjoy doing more pottery. No need to worry if you are a complete beginner or lack confidence in your skills, this class is designed for all levels.

 

What’s included:
All materials: stoneware clay, tools, equipment, the firing of one pot.
We will have a short tea/coffee break. Please let me know if you have any dietary requirements.

 

Firing your work

Your creation will be bisque fired (the first pottery firing), this is included in the cost of the workshop, additional pots are £5 each .
 

Optional Follow up Glazing Session
Pottery needs a second firing up to 1260 degrees c, before this you'll then have the option of a follow up Glazing Workshop, learning how to wax & glaze your pot. This should take approximately an hour and will be at my studio in Moffat, in small groups to be arranged at times to suit. Cost £20.

If you don't wish to glaze your own pottery I'll do it for you at a cost of £5 per piece.

The Potter's Wheel - Individual 1 to 1 Wheel-Throwing Class (Level:  Beginner)

What you'll learn Wheel-Throwing
How to wedge clay, centring on the wheel and making simple small pots. All in a supportive and fun environment.

Make a Trinket Box - Handbuilding Session 
(Level:  Beginner)

3 hour class

One off session

What you'll learn

You'll learn how to make a trinket box using the slab pottery method, one of the cornerstone techniques of pottery.

 

You can then decorate your piece/s using stamp imprinting, writing on pots, carving, sgraffito using coloured slips. The possibilities are endless.

What’s included: All materials using stoneware clay, tools, equipment, & the option to have one of your pots glazed & fired, first pot is included, additional pots are £5 each. Refreshments.

Hand building Day
(Level:  Beginner)

10am to 3pm

Some suggestions for you:
 

  • You may want to bring your own apron. You’re welcome to do this, but we do have one for you to use. 

  • Wear clothes you don't mind getting splashed.

  • It's easier to throw if you have short fingernails - longer nails get in the way of your enjoyment!

Further Information & T&C's
 

  • All classes and workshops are for over 16's

  • The cost of your class needs to be paid in advance, unless it's a Gift Voucher, just contact me once you've received your Gift Voucher to redeem it and arrange a time, or to book onto a Moffat Town group workshop when available. 

  • Your Gift Voucher can be used against any classes advertised here, or group workshops which may run in Moffat town.  If there's a difference in cost, I am happy to refund the difference, if the cost of the class is more than the value of voucher you'll need to pay the extra cost.
     

  • Cancellations:  Moffat Town Group Workshops - If, for whatever reason you can't make the workshop, please give me plenty of notice, if it's less than 14 days notice before the workshop date, unfortunately the full fee will be non refundable. You are welcome to find a person to replace you in the workshop.
    Cancellations:  Individual classes at my studio:  I will try to be as flexible as possible, if you can't make your booked class, please give me plenty of notice and we'll find an alternative time. If it's less than 24 hours notice the fee will be non refundable.
     

  • Payments types accepted : online shop, bank transfer, card payments or cheque.  

  • Pottery firing:  First pot per person is included, additional pots are £5 each.  Please note it may take 4-6 weeks before your pieces are fired and ready to be taken home.  I'll then let you know when your pottery is ready to collect.  

  • If you can't collect in person, you can pay for your pots to be posted to you.

  • All fired pottery needs to be collected or posted to you (you'll be responsible for this postage) within 6 weeks after completion.

  • All classes are in my studio, Moffat, DG10, Scotland, unless they are group workshops which will run in Moffat town.
